For wishing you a great 2010, here a brand new tutorial!
Sometimes screenshots I use for my icons are very dark and very… blue.
In this tutorial I use a screenshots of Keira Knightley from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Program: Photoshop
Steps: 8/10
Downloadable action: Yes
Download
01. Open your image and crop to 100×100
02. Duplicate it and set to Screen 100%
03. Duplicate again and set to Screen 100%
04. Layer -> New adjustment layer -> Color Balance
MIDTONES: 0 0 -1505. Layer -> New adjustment layer -> Selective Color
REDS: -100 0 0 0
CYANS: -33 0 0 0
NEUTRALS: -14 0 -5 -1106. Layer -> New adjustment layer -> Hue/Saturation. Set the Master Saturation to +18
07. Layer -> New adjustment layer -> Selective Color
REDS: -82 -1 0 0
NEUTRALS: -7 0 0 008. Layer -> New fill layer -> Solid Color -> #FAE6F1. Set to Soft Light 50%
You can also stop here if you like the result, but if you want a more colorful icon, keep following the tutorial
09. Layer -> New fill layer -> Solid Color -> #E5F1FA. Set to Color Burn 50%
10. Layer -> New fill layer -> Solid Color -> #F8BD77. Set to Soft Light 100%
